In complex, high-dimensional search spaces where traditional gradient-based optimization techniques struggle, nature offers an alternative: evolution through natural selection. Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) harness biological principles such as population-based variation, inheritance, and survival of the fittest, to solve challenging computational, design, and decision-making problems without requiring explicit gradient information.

This lecture provides a foundational overview of evolutionary computation while highlighting its resurgence in the field artificial intelligence.

报告人简介：

Our speaker today is Dr Ayush Joshi, a Senior Lecturer from the University of Bristol with BE, MSc and PhD qualifications. His research falls into two major areas: scholarship of learning – covering artificial intelligence for education, group work pedagogy, industry engagement in teaching and student experience design – and applied data science, with a special interest in evolutionary algorithms.
