报告题目: Processing and Applications of RGB-D Video from a Kinect Sensor

报告人:Ming-Ting Sun, Dept. of Electrical Engineering, University of Washington

Abstract: RGB-D (Kinect-style) cameras are novel low-cost sensing systems that capture RGB images along with per-pixel depth information. In this talk, we first describe our work on the use of such cameras for acquiring multiple images of an object from multiple viewpoints and building complete 3D models of objects. Such models have applications in a wide range of industries. We implemented a complete 3D object model construction process with object segmentation, registration, global alignment, model denoising, and texturing, and studied the effects of these functions on the constructed 3D object models. We also developed a process for objective performance evaluation of the constructed 3D object models. We collected laser scan data as the ground truth using a Roland Picza LPX-600 Laser Scanner to compare to the 3D models created by our process. After the discussion of the 3D object modeling work, we will brief describe some of our other activities and applications related to RGB-D video using a Kinect sensor.

Biography:

Ming-Ting Sun received the B.S. degree from National Taiwan University in 1976, and the Ph.D. degree from University of California, Los Angeles in 1985, all in electrical engineering.  He joined the University of Washington in August 1996 where he is a Professor. Previously, he was the Director of the Video Signal Processing Research Group at Bellcore. He holds 13 patents and has published over 200 technical papers, including 18 book chapters in the area of video technology.  He co-edited a book “Compressed Video over Networks.” He is the Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation, and will be a General Co-Chair for International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (ICME) 2016 at Seattle. He was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia (TMM) and a Distinguished Lecturer of the Circuits and Systems Society from 2000 to 2001.  He received an IEEE CASS Golden Jubilee Medal in 2000, and was a General Co-Chair of the Visual Communications and Image Processing 2000 Conference.  He was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology (TCSVT) from 1995 to 1997.  He received the TCSVT Best Paper Award in 1993.  From 1988 to 1991, he was the chairman of the IEEE CAS Standards Committee and established the IEEE Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform Standard.  He received an Award of Excellence from Bellcore for his work on the digital subscriber line in 1987.  Dr. Sun is a Fellow of the IEEE.
